Open Educational Resources (OERs) have grown and become more reputable while also becoming more sustainable. Two OERs discussed here include: Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources and OERCommons.

  1. Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources

The Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) is comprised of community and technical colleges dedicated to increasing student access to educational policy, resources, and practices (CCCOER, n.d.). CCCOER offers searchable databases for OER repositories, open courseware, open access journals, digital media, and open textbooks. CCCOER offers webinars from the past six years covering a range of topics including dual enrollment, student collaboration, public speaking, and specific topics for students or faculty. CCCOER also provides links to live conferences, research resources, case studies, and special initiatives (including large scale and special projects). CCCOERs robust initiative sets an excellent example of the capabilities of sustainable OER. The website is easy to navigate and provides relevant and current developments. CCCOER also maintains a social media presence on YouTube and Twitter.

Several opportunities exist to use CCCOER in my professional practice. Webinars could be shared to employees interested in improving public speaking skills. The Professional Development section could be used to help employees explore and develop skills, improve writing, and provide training.

  1. OERCommons

OER Commons (n.d.) was established by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge management in Education in 2007. Established with the help of grant funds, OER Commons was established on the belief in the human right to quality education and focused on spreading the mission to over 25 countries. OER Commons focused initially on K-12 education and put significant resources into professional teacher development. OER Commons has evolved and now offers resources for high quality teaching materials that can be customized and reused. Additional resources include: full university courses, interactive mini-lessons, adaptations to existing work, open textbooks, and extensive lesson plans, worksheets, and activities (OER Commons, n.d.). Most of the resources focus predominantly on K-12, however there resources dedicated to adult education, open textbooks, game based learning, and career and technical education (CTE).

In my professional practice, the CTE and adult education resources could be used. The CTE resources offered that would be beneficial to professionals in my organization include upper level accounting courses, criminal justice courses, photography, graphic arts, video production, and web design. Several employees within our organization completed education on these topics years ago and express interest in getting trained on current practices and how the field has changed over the years. Adult education resources include case studies, lectures, lessons, and games on different topics, including computer programming, terrorism, ethnic studies, legal topics, social work issues, and communication skills. Sharing these topics would help employees explore topics they are curious about and can look into from a professional perspective. Case studies published from other states offers yet another resource for us to stay connected with what other states are doing to tackle social issues.
